When Jack and I said in our initial dreaming up of Besides The Revolution, and the content that we hoped would be included, the news was one that we saw as an imperative to offer to our subscribers. The daily drill of finding out what has happened overnight is a good discipline and one that I enjoy a lot. What I didn’t realize was how, over the course of an administration, the government would slowly be able to erode any counter trajectory to its predetermined course. It shows just how difficult it is to do anything in that town, and how our system has become a hologram of the one the documents they keep under the glass at the Archives were intended to be. The machine is real, and it is powerful. Today’s news is just another indicator of what the politicians who want change are up against. This has become something antithetical to its intent. An empire is not a republic, and no amount of wishful thinking or dynamism from a politician can bring that ship around. Watching the Epstein files, the DOGE evaporation, NATO buying weapons for Ukraine, and autopen scandal after scandal going unpunished means that what we are in is a dying empire whose end is destined to rest upon the rocky shores of history. I don’t know if it can be rescued. The people want it, certainly much more than the political and elite class, but I am not sure that the machine will allow it. We fear AI because of its eventual autonomy. The Government illustrates what AI, if left unchecked, will be. Here are the headlines that caught our attention:
