Happy May Day to former Soviet sympathizers. I prefer the picking flowers version of the day to celebrate spring’s arrival, and am probably more in line with Grover Cleveland’s uneasiness with the socialist laborers’ version of the day, but nonetheless, it feels strange to think that we are more than a 1/3 of the way through another year already. The older I get, the faster all of this seems to go.

I’ve been doing a morning devotional walk that symbolically walks the rim-to-rim hike of the Grand Canyon called Altar In The Valley (It’s available on the Bible App for those interested), and it has been a very good morning reminder of the goodness all around us, even when we see troubles.

This morning, I was struck by how fortunate I am to have the chance to write for an audience and have the responses that have come. I have always loved to write, but to have put the discipline in now for two years of writing nearly every day has been a great gift. I have learned how to do it better and with more of a voice that suits my personality, and having feedback from people in real time on Substack is a blessing. Before I hand off the RFK-HSS hearing follow-up to Aaron Everitt, I just want to thank everyone who weighed in on the shorter series vs. long-form posts. I’ve been wrestling with this for a while. Each feature (currently frozen mid-draft) covers so much that distilling everything into a single arc has been a real challenge. Seeing that 98% of you prefer…

The other article came from a response to a question I asked the great Mark Steyn yesterday on his Clubland Q&A about the decline of the West and if secession is the best way through it. I know that is a dirty word to many, so this is a longer explanation of why I see it as a viable outcome and the lengthy precedent in American politics for the rights of the states to do it. For what my voice is worth, I hope Alberta secedes from Canada and creates its own country. It would be a powerful statement of decentralization.

The Canadian election went off as planned. A normal “conservative” got beaten by his liberal counterpart. He stood, gave his concession speech, and all the hulabaloo was over in a few hours. No long-drawn-out American-style campaign, no billions of dollars spent on the win. It went just as every Western society has decided elections will go. It will fee…
